The 1998 slasher film “Urban Legend” is getting an updated reboot with a producer famous for working on films such as “IT” and “The Nun” series developing the new version…
Make sure to check your backseat because a new “Urban Legend” movie is coming soon.
A reboot of the 1998 slasher film that featured an all star cast including Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Danielle Harris, Michael Rosenbaum, Tara Reid and Robert Englund is getting a reboot from producers Gary Dauberman and Neil Moritz.
The script for the new film is being written by Shanrah Wakefield, who previously worked on films such as “Kidnapped” and “Killer in Red.”
The original took place at a college in New England where a group of friends start getting knocked off one by one with each murder tying back to a classic urban legend like a killer hiding in the backseat of a car or a hook wielding psychopath going after a couple parked in a car. The film was directed by Jamie Blanks with a script written by Sylvio Horta.
While the “Urban Legend” reboot is still in the early stages, the new film is expected to focus on an “examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world.”
What that means exactly, we’ll have to wait and see.
The original “Urban Legend” was made for just $14 million and ended up earning more than $72 million at the box office. A couple of forgettable sequels followed but the original remains a bit of a cult classic slasher film among fans.
Dauberman is producing under his Coin Operated banner with his latest film “Until Dawn” actually landing in theaters on Friday. In addition to that film, Dauberman has worked on several major horror films in the past including the “IT” adaptations from director Andy Muschietti as well as several films in “The Conjuring” universe such as “Annabelle” and “The Nun.”
