Ryan Coogler penned a heartfelt letter of “eternal gratitude” after his latest film “Sinners” opened No. 1 at the box office and remains one of the best reviewed films of the year…
Ryan Coogler has every reason to be happy after his latest filmi “Sinners” opened No. 1 at the box office with the horror film earning $48 million at the domestic box office and $63 million globally.
The film set in the 1930’s features Michael B. Jordan in duel roles as brothers Smoke and Stack after they return home to open a juke joint but the dream for their opening night soon turns into a nightmare with a group of vampires descends upon them.
The film serves as Coogler’s first original story with inspiration drawn from his family — in particular his uncle, who grew up teaching him about Blues music — and drawing upon that history to create a rich, interesting world filled with dynamic characters and plenty of pulse-pumping music as well.
On Wednesday, Coogler released a letter expressing his thanks to all of the movie goers that helped “Sinners” find so much success during its opening weekend not to mention being the best reviewed film of 2025 so far.
“Eternal gratitude,” Coogler wrote. “My heart is bursting with it. I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see ‘Sinners.’ Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterward and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups.
“I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can.”
Coogler thanked numerous people from the film industry who served as his personal inspiration including directors such as Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter, Robert Rodriguez, Brian De Palma and the late David Lynch.
While theaters have still struggled since the global pandemic ended, certain films have still drawn huge audiences with “Sinners” pulling in huge numbers for its opening weekend, especially considering it’s an R-rated horror film. That’s not lost on Coogler.
“I believe in cinema,” Coogler said. “I believe in the theatrical experience. I believe it is a necessary pillar of society. It’s why me and so many of my colleagues have dedicated our lives to the craft. We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up. The global theatrical audience has allowed me to dream, find a career, and build a more sustainable life for me and my family.
“And the only way that I know how to thank you for that, is by continuing to mine my personal human experience and my relationships for more stories to bring to you in cinematic language. To see your response to the film has invigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.”
In five feature films, Coogler hasn’t missed yet.
From his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film “Fruitvale Station,” which first teamed him with Michael B. Jordan to his work on a pair of “Black Panther” films — the first earning a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards — and then reinvigorating the “Rocky” franchise with “Creed,” Coogler has now created a whole new niche for himself within the horror community with “Sinners.”
