Legendary director John Carpenter says he’s more than willing to get behind the camera again but only under a certain set of circumstances….
John Carpenter is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror directors of all-time but it’s been 15 years since he was last behind the camera for 2010’s “The Ward.”
Lately, Carpenter — who is receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday — has been more focused on his music career after releasing several albums and scoring films with his son, Cody Carpenter. He’s also running a comic book company alongside his wife and Carpenter famously loves playing video games in his spare time but what about directing again?
According to the 77-year-old auteur, he’s definitely not opposed to the idea but unlike so many of his films in the past, Carpenter says he’s no longer willing to compromise budget just for the sake of making a movie.
“Plans? I don’t know. I would love to direct again, given the right circumstances,” Carpenter told Variety. “But I’m not the same kid anymore who will do it for any amount of money. I can’t back into a budget anymore. I’m too old. It’s too hard. But directing is the love of my life. I’ll never stop loving that.”
Carpenter’s filmography features some of the best and most loved horror films of all time, which obviously includes the 1978 classic “Halloween” but he also made films such as “The Thing,” “They Live,” and “Prince of Darkness” not to mention crossing over into different genres with “Escape from New York” and “Big Trouble in Little China.”
There’s no telling what kind of project might get Carpenter interested enough to want to direct again but horror has never been hotter and the idea of him returning to lead another film should get every major studio salivating at the chance to work with him.
Will it happen? Only time will tell.
